It’s hard not to get excited about House Spirits Distillery, especially after finding out about the really unique spirits they produce– their respect for the classics only makes it all the more exciting each time they roll out their Stillroom Series limited-edition releases. With a few new exciting projects on the horizon, we caught up with House distiller Colin Howard to learn a bit about his inspiration, the House brand, and why Old Fashioneds can be a distiller’s best friend.
RYE & RIVET: When and how did you start creating your products?
COLIN HOWARD: House Spirits started in Corvallis, Oregon in 2004 and then moved to Portland in 2005.
R&R: What three words would you use to describe your brand’s ideology?
CH: Timeless, Narrative, Engaging.
R&R: What does “Integrity” mean to you in terms of modern production?
CH: In terms of modern production, staying persistent in one’s efforts to constantly examine and improve quality and efficiency with equal effort. Don’t rest on your reputation; be your toughest critic.
R&R: Who is an inspirational icon for you at the moment?
CH: Paul Newman.
R&R: What’s your drink of choice?
CH: I always like an old fashioned. It tells you if the spirit is ready for the stage or not.
