Like any heritage enthusiasts worth their salt, we know that it’s just not the holidays without those traditional songs— Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby—but somewhere between Black Friday and December 24th, we go a little stir-crazy with the classics and feel the need to bust out some new favorites in order to stay sane. Below are our favorite modern and alternative holiday jams— think of them as your musical lifeline during this most wonderful (and most stressful) time of the year.
Holiday (What Do You Want?)— Mike Doughty & Roseanne Cash
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)— Slow Club
Lo, How A Rose E’re Blooming— Feist
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing— Sufjan Stevens
2000 Miles (Pretenders cover)— Coldplay
Getting Ready For Christmas Day— Paul Simon
Baby, It’s Cold Outside— Leon Redbone & Zooey Deschanel
Santa Claus is Back in Town— My Morning Jacket
Santa, Bring My Baby Back to Me— Belle & Sebastian
Everything’s Gonna Be Cool This Christmas— Eels
Donna & Blitzen— Badly Drawn Boy
Auld Lang Syne— Black On White Affair
All links to the Hype Machine.

Right now, if you’re anything like us, your mind is millions of miles away from the concept of “Black Friday”. Maybe instead your thoughts are consumed by turkey temperatures, directions to grandmother’s house, or where the heck all of your relatives are going to sit once they arrive. Worry not. We at RYE & RIVET have done all the legwork for you in the second installment of our yearly small business post-Thanksgiving shopping guide, so you can go back to focusing on what’s really important, like whose turn it is to bring the Bourbon. This past Saturday, we were lucky enough to be able to go down to the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island. Between the St. Germain cocktails and Charleston lessons, we snapped a few “street” (“lawn”) style pics of sharp-dressed gents we came across. Unfortunately there won’t be another one of these parties until next summer, but look on the bright side— that gives you plenty of time to research and plan your getup for the big day. And to stock up on particularly lush picnic accoutrements to make everyone else jealous, if that’s your thing.

Fine arts startup Artsicle asked me to guest-curate an online exhibit using some of the works in their collection, coming from a menswear-y perpective. I have to admit, there were so many great pieces that I had trouble narrowing it down! Go check out the final piece here.

Got to sit down the other day with Nate Dumas of The Shanty, NYDC’s own tasting room-slash-bar. Want to learn why NYDC makes gin? Want to learn why The Shanty doesn’t play jazz all day? Want to learn why Prohibition was actually really shitty for cocktails? Answers to these questions and more can be found here.
